Ok so today I talked to a Yelp Representative and got to question them about their search results algorithm.

What I found out is that their internal search results are controlled by:

1.  Content – this means in Yelp’s case How complete is your business profile?  The more the better period.

2.  Traffic – this was very interesting to me.  They are looking to give the best results and so the more your page is viewed the more the will show it.  This means if you can get to the top and get most the views you are in a REALLY good spot.  So how can you cause more traffic to your Yelp page?  Invest some time in pushing traffic their now will get you more traffic for years to come.

3.  Reviews – hmm stop asking for written on PAPER testimonials.  Give them your link to yelp or have it open on a computer in your office.  But I only suggest that you do this with people that use yelp because 1 review profiles get deleted per many reports.

4.  Respond to reviews – Yelp wants you to be active.  So leave responses to your reviews the good and the even the bad if you get any.

I personally believe that Yelp and Citysearch really need a good amount of attention (because of the recent FTC regulations on testimonials) you can’t get better SOCIAL PROOF that is more believable than review sites and as of this writing Yelp and Citysearch are the leaders with the exception of google local of course BUT google pulls form both of these sites so have you ever heard of the 2fer?
